My hiking partner "Boulder" takes a much deserved break after scaling a sheer rock precipice along the trail.
As with much of the trail, this part follows an old farm road near the Catawba Mountain Shelter.
The Catawba Valley stretches out before the hiker with Tinker Cliffs visible on the right some five
miles away.
"Boulder" pauses on the famous overhang at the summit of McAfee Knob.
"Boulder" shows a moment of quiet awe and reflection atop a rock ledge near the summit.
Thinking of living up to his name, "Boulder" contemplates climbing out of a narrow canyon.
